︎︎︎Experimental Typeface Design
In the exploration of nature of letters, I found the audio side of letters is particularly interesting - the pronunciation of each letter is unique to itself. Therefore, I wanted to find a way to combine the form of a letter with how it sounds. Instead of joining together the two different dimensions - visual and sound - in a 2D world, I started to think: why not add one more dimension and make a 3D typeface which people can explore in different directions? Hence, an ‘audible’ 3D typeface was born. It’s audible, as you feel like hearing it when you see it.
The letters are made up of green-painted toothpicks stucked by hand on foams which are wrapped in black paper. The colours are informed by the colours of waveform in Adobe Audition software.
The form of the letters is based on Helvatica, since it’s the most commonly used typeface.
