Unnamed
︎︎︎Zine Making

‘Unnamed’ is a zine-making project inspired by Riot Grrrl movement. Out of love for zine-making and in order to become a riot grrrl, I decided to make my own riot grrrl zine focusing on topic from my cultural background.
To quote Miranda July, ‘ What zine-making taught me about writing: 1. shock yourself with honesty, 2. the truth is messy, 3. be brave like her. I use these riot grrrl skills every single day.’ This also what I would like to achieve through my project: to learn to be honest with myself, to accpect who I am, to let things be and to reconcile with my perfectionism. I want to practice, showcase and advocate the ‘riot grrrl skills’ in the making of the zine.
The making of the zine was mainly through collaging. It involved a typewriter, an embossing label maker, some magazines and marker pens. I also asked my illustrator friend to do some small illustrations which shows female power and sisterhood. For the written part, I wrote down my thoughts about what feminists in China were going through like writing a diary.
My original zine piece
I experimented with risograph to photocopy my zine on A4 coloured paper. For readability and to return to the original low-cost fanzine method, I also printed with an ordinary inkjet printer.
Unnamed takes the form of a zine, but if you unfold it, you will get a fancy poster.
