‘Start the Revolution’ is a short moving image sequence reinterpreting a flyer found in the Riot Grrrl movement. (Riot Grrrl is an underground feminist punk movement began during the 1990s in the United States. It features a very unique and strong visual style often seen in self-published zines and posters.)
In this sequence, I want to deliver the rebellious, passionate, emotional, vulnerable, powerful and feminine spirits of the movement through employing analogue ways of working to produce type, for example letterpress, typewriter, handwriting, etc.. This is similar to what can be seen in Riot Grrrl’s publications, where almost everything is handmade and mistakes are welcome.
The video is made with stop frames. The background music was recorded in the letterpress studio in my university to imply my production methods.
